I have reviewed this before with the following passage but have seen many others, who have also liked this movie, feel unhappy with the ending.
If you have no knowledge of gambling then it might well be meaningless though I think an intelligent person will understand the torment from the point of view of the secondary characters.
James Caan puts in a brilliant performance. The cast is quite strong and they don't get up to fantastic things.
This is a real movie and the moral of the story isn't friendly. A must for any gambler. What he feels after getting out of trouble and then back into it, trashing his career and his mother's trust, is absolute disgust.

Adam Woodward. It's hard to know what to make of Mark Wahlberg's character in The Gambler - but at least that puts you on an equal footing with Wahlberg himself.
Robbie Collin. No matter how finely feathered the hair or slim and trim the figure, Wahlberg is simply one of the glossy mistakes Wyatt's film trips over.

She then ran off with a "Pool Hall" Charlie, another gambler, who had just won a fortune on the lottery.
Sharpe vowed to become a new person after this day. As luck would have it, an armored truck crashed a few feet away from him.
Seeing this as a sign, Sharpe helped himself to all of the money he could get and vowed to take whatever he could from life from that day on.
He adopted the name the Gambler in remembrance of his grandfather. For the next few years, the Gambler joined a traveling carnival, where he gained his skills with disguises, pistols, and throwing knives.
Sharpe was immediately successful as a criminal. He started off robbing trains and small town banks. Growing bored, he moved East to the big cities.
He was spotted in Gotham City by Green Lantern while standing next to his own wanted poster. The Gambler eluded Green Lantern twice using his special Derringer, which could fire ammonia or blackout gas in addition to real bullets.
When he emerged again, he had adopted a new identity after his riverboat gambling grandfather: The Gambler. As the Gambler, he earned early fame by pulling off a small town bank robbery against heavy odds.
At some point, Sharpe spent time with a carnival, learning a variety of knife throws and make-up techniques to complete his disguises.
So effective were his disguises that Sharpe himself claims to have forgotten his original appearance and his age to this day remains unknown.
Initially, Sharpe remained in the Mississippi Delta, robbing trains, small town banks and the like. One of the first true costumed criminals, he rapidly became one of the most successful criminals and developed a cult of personality reminiscent of the gangsters of the previous decade.
By , the Gambler's ego was not satisfied with his Midwestern successes and took his operations to the larger cities of the East.
He took the brazen tack of hanging out in post offices next to his own "Wanted" poster to provoke passers-by, two of which were Alan Scott and Doiby Dickles.
Realizing that the famous criminal was in Gotham City, Scott assumed his identity as Green Lantern and pursued the criminal.
He caught up with the Gambler twice, only to be thwarted by the special derringer that the Gambler kept hidden in his sleeve, one which fired ammonia or blackout gas.
Finally, at a horse race, the Gambler decided to shift the odds in his favor by provoking the horses to stampede into the crowds to cover his escape.
Green Lantern rounded up the beasts, however, and after the capture of his henchmen, the Gambler himself was apprehended and sent to Gotham State Penitentiary as Green Lantern vol.
Gambler, like most criminals in comics, was extremely adept at escaping from prison. In , he wrote a note to Green Lantern telling the hero that he would escape prison and then daring the hero to stop him.
When the hero arrived to search the prison, he was surprised to see his friend Doiby Dickles in a cell. Lee gives Jim seven days to pay off his debts or be murdered.
During one of his classes, Jim begins an awkward discussion of literary excellence based on Shakespeare as an example, discussing how almost all aspiring writers fail to accomplish literary excellence.
Jim singles out some exemplary athletes in his class for discussion. First he picks Dexter, an emerging tennis star; he later confronts a basketball student star, Lamar Allen, who does not pay attention in class but intends to become an NBA basketball player.
Jim expresses his extremist view on achieving excellence in one's field or vocation of choice.
If you can't be exemplary, Jim reasons, then you might as well resign yourself to mediocrity. Making a general comment to the class, he tells them that no one but Amy Phillips, a quiet student, is capable of a career in literature.
Jim identifies Amy as a potential writing prodigy based on her previous writings in his class, as well as having previously encountered her working surreptitiously as a waitress at the underground gambling house.
Amy develops a personal interest in Jim, which he reciprocates. After the class, Jim visits his mother Roberta at the family's luxury estate, but she says that she will not give him any more money.
Jim convinces Roberta to give him enough money to pay off his debts, expressing no gratitude to her, then gambles it all away during a trip to a casino with Amy.
Baraka kidnaps Jim, has him tied-up and tortured, and then confronts him with an ultimatum—if he does not convince Lamar to win one of his college basketball games by a margin of 7 points or less , he will murder Amy.
Jim goes to Frank, who advises him to change his version of a "fuck you" attitude towards life by getting enough money to build a safe house and make reliable low yield investments, for protection against his severe gambling losses.
Lamar succeeds, barely, so Jim uses his winnings to pay his debt to Baraka, denying he knows anything about the large bet made in Vegas.
Jim then convinces both Lee and Frank to meet him in a neutral gambling den, where he wagers enough money to pay both men off—if he wins—on a single roulette spin.
Successful, he leaves the money at the club for Lee and Frank. On an apparent adrenaline rush, Jim runs miles through the city to arrive at Amy's apartment; he is broke, but free from debt.

The gambler then mentions that the "secret to survivin' is knowing what to throw away, and knowing what to keep" and that "the best you can hope for is to die in your sleep".
At this point, the gambler puts out the cigarette and goes to sleep. At the end of the song we are told that "somewhere in the darkness, the gambler, he broke even", and that the narrator finds "an ace that I could keep", in his final words.
Rogers' rendition in an appearance on The Muppet Show indicates the gambler actually dies in his sleep when he "broke even", thus really making those his "final words" ever spoken.
