Rainbow on Mt Oxford

Oxford is a small rural township nestled just below Mt Oxford, at the edge of the Canterbury plains, with the Torlesse range of mountains creating a dramatic backdrop in the middle-distance. It is about 50km from Christchurch, on New Zealand's South Island. Oxford has a close community with a population of just over 2,000 - and is home to some lovely speciality shops and cafes. Formerly a buzzing logging village Oxford boasts a replica of the old Oxford jail, a museum, an art gallery, a supermarket, a dairy, a play park and skate park, and a well-stocked local bookstore, as well as several gift stores - and a small, but welcoming, Sunday Farmers' Market. There is also a motel, a nearby holiday park in Ashley Gorge, and a number of BnBs - as well as fresh raw farm milk from Cavan Milk. Trampers are spoilt for choice with a large number of short, longer, and overnight options available in the area.

The photos below include an old plough and millstone, the replica Oxford jailhouse (and a close-up of one of the locks), the art gallery exterior, a street view, and a close-up of marigolds in the Oxford Community Gardens.
